1 Corinthians 7:36?
by coolhandluke ini'm a bit confused.
i saw in cognac's thread that she used this scripture regarding something having to do with fornication.
i haven't been keeping up.

JH,
I answered that above:
It encourages careful, responsible behavior, as opposed to casual sex with a different partner on a regular basis (fornication), or sexual relations with others outside the existing marriage (adultery).
BA- Cheers

What if they have sex, thus getting married, and not liking it.....lol Will they be stuck together forever, knowing from the start something's wrong?
Great question. It's one that I've struggled with. I can only say my conclusion is this- take the time to know the potential mate, feel that a lifetime together is "in the cards", have the mutual commitment and take it seriously before having sex (scriptural marriage). In today's day and age, it is unfortunate that things don't always work out the way we'd like, but when such "divorces" occur, they will be a lot less frequent than they will be without taking the above steps prior to sex (marriage). As someone who has been through many relationships/marriages, that is the best explanation I have. BA PS- Edited to add- Also, you need to discuss EVERYTHING, including sexual desire, frequency, likes/dislikes, gentle/rough, kinky/not, etc, BEFORE having sex, that way, you shouldn't be in for a disappointment afterwards! Honesty and trust is what it's all about! -

Raising children without a religion - thoughts, advice?

Worst advice ever! How stupid of you to imagine that someone who doesn't want a religion will want yours.
Lol! Pot, meet kettle!
Or yours, either! Let each one make up their own mind, in the end each will answer for the decisions they've made. Everyone, including you, has a religion, some of us are simply honest about it. You can continue to delude yourself, living in denial of what is obvious to others. Your sneering bravado at all who don't see things the way you do is an indictment of just how miserable your "religion" makes you and your ilk.
BA- Have a lovely day!

ink,
I agree that seems to be an awkward (at best) translation. In context, reading the surrounding verses, it's clear it's not referring to incest.
JH,
Should it be the same today, biblically speaking?
Why not, biblically speaking? It is do-able, you know. And it makes a lot of sense if you think about it. It encourages careful, responsible behavior, as opposed to casual sex with a different partner on a regular basis (fornication), or sexual relations with others outside the existing marriage (adultery). STDs, one parent households, bitterness towards the opposite sex, etc, would not be nearly as rampant if such were practiced.
BA- What made sense then still makes sense today.

for it is better to marry
Scripturally, marry = sexual intercourse. It's why the sexual act should not be taken lightly. I don't see how it could be any clearer.

No need to be part of an organized religion, however, some "need" the structure such provide to lead them to the Christ (Phillipians 1).
Ideally, let the Holy Spirit teach you, by praying in faith for it to fill you, so that as you read the Holy Scriptures, you will be taught by God's Holy Spirit. If you don't have the faith to do so, then perhaps one of the organized sects of Christianity will suffice until your faith is stronger.

I'll state it yet again- biblical marriage is different than todays legal marriage, they are two completely different concepts. Those who do not study the Bible can spout off their opinion all they like, I have answered the question scripturally, and can back it up with the Scriptures. Becoming "one flesh" is scriptural lingo for the sexual act, which, upon occuring, IS scriptural marriage. If one then breaks that marriage bond by having sexual intercourse with another, that is a grevious sin. That is why sexual intercourse is not to be taken casuallly, time must be spent to both get to know each other, and to make a commitment to do the utmost to hold the marriage bond, and bed, sacred.

So, if 2 people have intercourse before they are married the apostle paul was stating that was not a sin.
To clarify, scripturally, once the man and the woman have sexual intercourse, they have become one flesh, and so at that point they are married.
Now, if afterwards, one partner has sexual union with another, they are guilty of the sin of adultery / fornication.
The obvious exception would be in the case of divorce.
